2014 COULD BE DEADLIEST YEAR FOR NYC PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS

Raskin & Kremins, LLP March 31, 2014

As one of the most densely populated metropolitan areas in the world, New York City has earned a reputation for being one of the deadliest cities for pedestrians.   The New York Daily News recently reported that 2014 is shaping up to be a particularly deadly year for pedestrian fatalities, with seven pedestrian deaths reported in the first two weeks of the year.

One of the most notable pedestrian deaths occurred during the first week of January, when a nine-year-old boy was mowed down by a taxi while walking across an Upper West Side street with his father.  NYPD data shows that the number of children killed in pedestrian accidents nearly doubled between 2011 and 2013, from seven to 13.

According to the NYPD, more than 11,600 pedestrians were injured – and 136 were killed – in New York City during 2012, with the majority of fatalities (48) occurring in Brooklyn.  There were 173 pedestrian fatalities in 2013 and the NYPD reported that seven pedestrians were struck and killed in the first 12 days of 2014.
